Case Study: Regional Pricing, Catalogs, and Fees on Shopify

Our expertise. Your experts.

Minion built a custom Shopify application for Aboff's to manage the commercial differences between its New York and Virginia markets. Regional catalogs connect product visibility, pricing overrides, and additional fees to one shared storefront and administrative workflow.

Aboff's serves paint customers across New York and Virginia. Minion developed the custom application behind its regional catalog experience, giving the team practical controls for product visibility, local pricing, and fees within one Shopify store.

The Challenge

A shared storefront has to reflect how each market actually operates. Products available in one region may not belong in another. Prices can vary, and additional charges such as paint care fees or vendor surcharges need to apply only to the relevant products and markets.

Aboff's needed a manageable way to connect those rules to its product catalog and carry them through purchasing. A percentage surcharge added another layer: it had to use the subtotal of qualifying products after discounts, then appear as a single charge in the cart and checkout.

Our Solution

Minion built a custom Shopify catalog application that separates default product data from regional pricing, visibility, and fee rules. The administrative interface gives the team bulk controls and import tools, while the storefront applies the relevant catalog to the customer's market.

  • Regional Catalogs: Price-and-visibility catalogs support a single state, while visibility-only catalogs can cover multiple states. Each catalog controls which products appear and when regional prices override the default.
  • Location-Based Pricing: The deployed storefront uses state-level location detection to apply regional catalog rules through the product and cart purchase path.
  • Product Assignment: Configurable tag mappings connect products to their catalogs, allowing matching products to enter the appropriate regional catalog automatically.
  • Catalog Administration: Product rows, expandable variants, pagination, selection controls, and bulk pricing operations give staff a structured way to manage catalog data.
  • CSV Imports: Import tools support pricing overrides, product-tag assignments, and fee data so catalog changes can be managed in batches.
  • Regional Fees: Configurable charges, including New York paint care fees, are associated with the relevant catalog and carried into checkout as separate line items.
  • Discount-Aware Surcharges: A percentage-based Benjamin Moore surcharge is calculated from qualifying products after discounts and displayed as one charge in the cart and checkout.
  • Connected Purchasing: Discount entry and fee calculation work together in the cart, with the resulting prices and charges passed into checkout.

The Results

  • A live regional catalog application supporting the commercial differences between New York and Virginia within one Shopify store
  • Centralized administrative controls for product visibility, regional price overrides, catalog assignments, and fees
  • Repeatable catalog updates through tag-based assignment, bulk operations, and CSV imports
  • Connected fee calculations that account for qualifying merchandise, regional rules, and discounts before checkout
  • Client-reviewed production releases for both the initial application and the percentage surcharge enhancement

Why This Matters

Retailers operating across markets need their online store to reflect local commercial requirements. The complexity sits in the relationship between products, prices, visibility, fees, and the purchase journey.

For Aboff's, those relationships are managed through a custom application connected to Shopify. Regional differences become structured catalog rules that staff can maintain through a dedicated interface and apply through purchasing.

Regional retail needs commerce that reflects how each market operates.

Aboff's needed one storefront to support regional differences in product availability, prices, and additional fees.

Minion connected those rules through a custom catalog application, giving the team the tools to manage local requirements within its existing Shopify operation.

“ Working with Minion for the Gravity Blankets website redesign was a great experience overall. From day 1, they understood our pain points with our current site and what we wanted to achieve with our new site. They used this input and their expertise to build a design that achieved these from Day 1. We barely had any edits on the design as result. Throughout the process, the team was very quick to implement the content and any tweaks we had along the way. Their system for flagging these tasks also kept things very organized. We would get updates as items were completed so it saved us from reaching out for status updates. ”

“ Minion has been a good partner throughout a lengthy multi-site project! They know their stuff, and have taken the time to get to know our stuff (Triple Eight Helmets, Pads, and Protective Gear worn by everyone from the world's best skateboarders like Tony Hawk - to kids just starting out in the cul-de-sac). We started with a long list of objectives and requirements, and we've been able to work together creatively and collaboratively through all phases of the project, from the design of the theme to the function of each aspect of the Shopify store, and even the development of a couple of custom apps. If you are looking for a good team to build your Shopify Store - I recommend Minion. ”
